Course Overview
This class builds a strong foundation for high school Algebra 1. Students learn to use variables to represent unknown values, write and solve equations, and analyze proportional relationships. The focus shifts from simple calculations to logical reasoning and real-world problem-solving.
Core Topics
The Number System: Operations with integers (positive and negative numbers), rational numbers, and absolute value.
Expressions and Equations: Simplifying algebraic expressions, combining like terms, and solving one-step and multi-step equations and inequalities.
Ratios and Proportions: Unit rates, proportions, percents, and scale drawings or proportional relationships.
Geometry: Angle relationships, area, surface area, volume, and an introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem.
Statistics and Probability: Analyzing data sets, probability models, and simple/compound events.
Student Expectations
Students develop computational fluency, critical thinking, and the ability to explain their mathematical reasoning clearly. Successful completion prepares learners to advance directly into Algebra 1 in the following grade.
